Sometimes
confused as SPECIMENS, the notes shown here are
REMAINDERS which the
Norges Bank
cancelled after the Nazi
occupation ended by
overprinting "SPECIMEN" and adding punched holes. 150 full sets of these were made available free to an Oslo
numismatic society sometime after WWII. These notes are not
SPECIMENS as national banks have no need to issue SPECIMENS after an
issue is replaced. There was no apparent need to issue SPECIMENS for
the 2nd issue around 1950 when the 4th issue [1948] was probably still
in circulation. True SPECIMENS are RARE, however, these REMAINDERS
are at best scarce.
These REMAINDERS were created as the Norges Banks method of canceling the remaining notes they had on hand which were not planned to be issued. Prior and later, it is thought that the Norges Bank issued all produced notes up to the point when they changed to a new design production. It was not the Norges Bank practice to produce REMAINDERS. The Nazi government produced the 2nd issue notes throughout the war. Norway issued series III immediately at the end of the war replacing the 2nd issue. All REMAINDERS it is believed were destroyed except for a number of sets cancelled by overprinting "SPECIMEN", holed and having consecutive serial numbers, not all zeros. It is believed that at no other time has Norges Bank made any notes available to collectors or the general public, especially for free! |
