BACKGROUNDER

We gratefully acknowledge numismatist Walt Jellum who provided the above images and background information.

A letter from the King dated 30 July 1813 led to dividing of the Riksbanken into three divisions; Danish in Copenhagen, Slesvig-Holstein in Kiel and Norwegian in Christiania.

The war nearly bankrupted Denmark and its banking system. It was the division of Denmark on January 14, 1814 forcing Swedish rule upon Norway that ended the legal issuance of these notes, even though they continued to do so, back dating them to before Jan. 14th.

Three types of notes are as follows:

TYPE I - Legally issued notes dated up to the failure of Riksbanken, about Jan. 14, 1814.

TYPE II - Notes issued after Jan 14, 1814 but without regard to the bank failure.

TYPE III - Notes issued after Jan 14, 1814 but with knowledge of the bank failure. These notes were back dated before Jan 14 and can be identified by serial suffixes, A, a, b.
