BACKGROUNDER - ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The New Caledonia Bank was established in 1870 based on the structure of the Bank of Indo-China (Banque de la Indo-Chine).

New Caledonia's large nickel exports to Europe remained unsold causing the notes to be highly discounted. This resulted in a loss of confidence in the bank and the support of the government. The final straw came in 1878 with the Kanak revolt causing the bank to declare bankruptcy.

In 1888 Banque de la Indo-Chine opened a branch in Nouméa.
