BACKGROUNDER

British North America was the term used for the colonies and territories of the British Empire in continental North America.

The Seven Years' War officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on February 10, 1763. As part of the treaty, France ceded all North American land to Britain, except Louisiana (which went to Spain) and Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.

By 1775 the British Empire included 20 territories north of New Spain; Newfoundland, Rupert's Land, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, the Thirteen Colonies (which later united to become the United States), East and West Florida, and the Province of Quebec.
