The
Shan State
Army was established in the 1960's by various rebel groups, funded by
taxes on drugs. Their purpose was to establish an independent country for
the Shan (Tai Yai) people, located in the eastern part of Burma. The Shan
people are ethnically related to the Thai, Lao and Chinese and are sometimes
referred to as Tai. The rebel army was disbanded in the mid-1960's but other
similar groups have been since constituted.
In 1973, the Burmese government signed an agreement with the USA to
eradicated poppy cultivation thereby eliminating the Shan nationalist
movements. A number of successor groups continue today - Eastern Shan
State Army (ESSA), Mong Tai Army (MTA), Myanmar National Democratic
Alliance Army (MNDAA) and the United Wa State Army (UWSA). They are
reportedly actively involved in the drug trade.
On 17.5.2005 the Shan State made a
Declaration of Independence and the
Shan Government was elected by the people. On 25.3.2005 His Royal
Highness, Prince Hso Khan Pha Yawn Hwe was sworn in as President and Head
of State of the Federated Shan States.
The legal basis of the succession was declared to be that the Shan people
were never under the rule of the Kings of Burma or of the British Colony
of Burma. A complete government has been formed but has not received
widespread recognition as yet.
The 1960's banknotes shown above are quite scarce and do not come on the market
very often. The 1 Tep is the most scarce with the 5 Tep being found
occasionally.
The Federated Shan States currently uses the Burmese Kyat as
its currency. |
