PERUVIAN DISCOVERIES

Posted June, 2000

I am glad to present a few Peruvian banknotes, which to the best of my knowledge are rare and/or unknown.

The first banknote is the "1 Sol Banco de Arequipa" note. This banknote was printed by National Banknote Company. It has three interesting features: First the note has been hand-signed and dated by two of the managers of the bank; second, the note shows that it has been circulated; third, the serial number of the note has only five digits. The reason I consider this note rare is because Banco de Arequipa 1 Sol notes are almost always seen as uncirculated remainders, unsigned, undated, and with six serial digits. It is important to add that there are also a few cases of other denominations such as 500, 100, and 50 Soles which are also rarely seen with similar characteristics.

The second note is a "50 Centavos banco de Trujillo." This banknote was printed by American Banknote Company. It has the same interesting featrues as the banknote I outlined above. First, the note has been handsigned by the manager of the bank. Second, the note shows that it has circulated. Third, the serial number of the note has only four digits. The reason why I consider this note rare is because Banco de Trujillo fractional denomination notes are always seen as uncirculated remainders, unsigned, and with five-digit serial numbers. The only case of franctional denominations which are signed are the 10 and 20 Centavos notes, but the signatures are printed and not written as in the case of the note described here.

The third note is a "1 Libra Cheque Circular." This banknote was printed by Litografia y Tipografia Carlos Fabbri Lima-Peru. This note, which most likely is only a proof, is very interesting as well as rare; not only because it is unlisted but also because this printer issued a series of banknotes in 1/2, 1, 5, and 10 Libras in 1918 but the design is completely different from that which we have here. The Cheques Circulares were issued only in 1914 and 1918.
