The Latin American Paper Money Society was
established in 1973 and is popularly known as LANSA.
LANSA was started by renowned numismatist, Life Member #1
Yasha Beresiner
of
InterCol London, as
a result of his many trips to Latin America in the 1970's. Yasha
recalls how LANSA was
started, "I
met up with Colombian and Peruvian collectors and the idea of an
association for interested parties seemed appropriate. I had
office facilities, a good secretary and a friendly printing
company thus LANSA was launched. LANSA was intended to be the
Latin American Notaphilic Society (that was the word in fashion
at the time for paper money collectors) and we added an ‘A’ to
the end to make it pronounceable!"
Latin America is formally defined as the
region
of the
Americas
where
romance
languages
(i.e., those derived from
Latin),
particularly
Spanish,
Portuguese
and
French
are primarily spoken.
In our
Gallery of
banknote images we have tried to be more inclusive and
have classified 61 countries or
entities as areas of possible interest based on their geographic
location within the Latin America sphere.
LANSA currently has members from 53 different countries or
entities.
We encourage members to share their experiences and knowledge
for all to enjoy. Numismatics is a wonderful way to bring us all
together, regardless of any geopolitical
considerations. We especially look to members to help
young collectors develop as they are the future of numismatics.
