One of the first papermakers of English PM was the firm started by a Huguenot,
Henri de Portal who escaped to England from France. He settled in 1712 at Bere
Mill in South Hampton, He did so well that he leased a mill at Laverstoke,
both on the river Test near Overton in Hampshire. Where, with the help of his
fellow emigrants, he began to make paper from the wood of apple trees.
