Zanzibar became a Great Britain Protectorate in 1890. On 12.1.1964 Zanzibar became a Constitutopnal Monarchy and on 26.1.1964 it merged with Tanganyika to form the United Republic of Tanzania, within which Zanzibar remains a semi-autonomous region.

Zanzibar banknote issues are among the most desired and highly sought after for advanced collectors and investors. While they can be expensive, it is possible to periodically obtain notes, unlike Hejaz banknotes which are virtually unobtainable.
 
In a 2011 Spink & Son auctioned a set of notes in a presentation folder realized  $287,000 USD. In the Spink Insider, Winter 2015 there was a wonderful article by renowned Spink's World Bank Note specialist Barnaby Faull on "Treasures from Zanzibar" from which the images above marked   _SP  were obtained. Spink is one of the premier auction houses that might periodically be a source of these rare banknotes.

REPRODUCTIONS and FANTASY ISSUES
We have also listed a number of related  "banknotes" that fall into the category of modern, unauthorized reproductions and/or fantasy issues. This is being done in an effort to assist visitors to understand the differences between original banknotes issues by the Zanzibar government and modern, unauthorized altered copies prepared for the purposes of satisfying collectors who can't obtain real banknotes of Zanzibar.

In some cases, real genuine Zanzibar banknotes and/or banknote images were simply copied and "reissued" without any indication that they were not real banknotes. Since Zanzibar banknotes are highly sought after and expensive, collectors and other interested parties buy these items as a way to "fill a slot" of missing countries notes. Unfortunately many IBNS members feel eBay does not enforce its guidelines to prevent sellers from offering note copies that are unmarked and can be used for illicit purposes, so beware.

The 1,000 Rupee notes shown here are fantasy issues as no Zanzibar  banknotes are known to have been issued in this denomination. Both notes are properly marked as fantasy issues and were prepared by the Reed Banknote Company of Sarasota, Florida, USA.
