BACKGROUNDER

Upper Senegal was created as a French Territory on 6.9.1880 and ten years later on 18.8.1890 was renamed the French Sudan Territory.  On 17.10.1899 French Sudan was broken up and a portion became Upper Senegal & Niger. On 4.12.1920 it was renamed French Sudan and it was granted independence on 24.11.1958 as the Sudanese Republic.
