Thrace(Thraki)
was annexed from the Ottoman Empire in November 1912 and Western Thrace on 10
August 1913. At the Treaty of
Neuilly-sur Seine Bulgaria ceded Thrace
to Greece. At the same time Dobruja was ceded to Romania and some border areas
of western Macedonia (Bosiligrad, Caribrod and Strumica) were ceded to the
Yugoslavia
state. No documentation is known as to the authority for these issues. They may have been issued from October 1919 during the Allied Occupation of Thrace, called Thrace-Interalliee. Some reports indicate that some or all of these notes may be spurious. Bulgarian National Bank issues P.14 - P.25 have surfaced with a Thrace Internationale revalidation adhesive stamps affixed to them and an embossed seal which reads "Thrace Interalliee". Some issues are known to have blue adhesive stamps. Other types are known, one with a black horizontal overprint stamps on the face which reads "Gouvernement de la Thrace Occidentale Administration Civil de District Gumuldjina". Others with both black and red oval stamps on the face and back. These circular overstamps contain similar elements to the Thrace Internationale adhesive stamp. It is not known whether these overstamps are genuine. We'd appreciate hearing from Individuals who can provide additional information about these issues. IS We gratefully acknowledge Bulgarian banknote trader Ivo Shahanov for submitting these images. |
