Temple notes
as the above 1 Rupee were modeled on the Tibetan government note of 5
Srang. This one was issued in the 1940's by Tashi Dargyas Monastery.
The name of this monastery is mentioned on the obverse inscription of the
note as "bkra shis dar rgyas dgon". According to a Tibetan informant these notes were given to those monks of this Eastern Tibetan monastery who regularly attended religious instructions. The monks could use these notes to buy tea bricks from the monastery store room. A 1/2 rupee denomination is also reported to have been issued. |
