BACKGROUNDER

Starting with the 1982 issues, banknotes were denominated in Pounds Sterling. This was a consequence of the Financial Crisis of 2007–12, with the Banking Act 2009 altering the rules governing the issue of private banknotes in Scotland and Northern Ireland. It requires commercial issuing banks to hold backing assets to protect the value of their notes in the event of commercial failure of the bank.   Courtesy: Wikipedia
