BACKGROUNDER

With the robbery of 9 March 1828, The Greenock Bank Company  gained notoriety, however, it survived the initial ₤28,350 loss. It later recovered a large amount of the loss in a negotiation with the thieves!

The Greenock Bank, founded in 1785, had significant business activity in the West Highlands and had branches in  Rothesay, Lochgilphead, Cumberland, Westmoreland and on the Isle of Man.

It was absorbed by Western Bank of Scotland in 1843 as the last private (non-chartered government) bank in Scotland.
