BACKGROUNDER

Nepal held historic elections on April 10, 2008 and the Maoist Party won a majority. The Maoist Party had conducted a decade long insurgency to oust the monarchy using violent tactics.

The situation in Nepal in 2011 revolves around getting the consensus government to work and it is far from stable. The parties are struggling to govern - the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), the Maoists and the opposition Nepali Congress.

In the video above, American activist Ms. Demi Moore interviewed Nepal Prime Minister Khanal where he stated he has requested funding to add mandatory education in his country. In addition, PM Khanal said that this education would also be for girls in an attempt to level the playing field in the hopes of providing a better future for girls and women and reduce the possibility of trafficking.
