The Isles of France & Bourbon
was a former French colony located in the Indian Ocean about 500 miles
east of Madagascar.
Composed of two main islands,
one of which was Isles de France (now Mauritius) and the second island,
Bourbon, now Reunion, a French Overseas Department.
During the Napoleonic period Reunion was called Isle de Bonaparte.
Will the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) be going away? The
International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea Confirms Sovereignty of
Mauritius over Chagos Archipelago, primarily because the UK forcibly
removed Chagos residents 50 years ago. This decision as well as
similar UN declarations were made a year ago but the UK and the USA,
who have the Diego Garcia joint military base on Chagos, have refused
to leave. Yesterday Mauritius decided to send a small number of Chagos
natives to visit the islands without permission from the British,
apparently to test the decision! The USA/UK bases on Diego Garcia are
very strategic and important so it appears that it will not have to be
shut down and some agreement can be reached with former residents and
the gouvernment of Mauritius...
3.10.2024 It appears that a deal has been reached between UK and Mauritius to turn over the BIOT to Mauritius, except for Diego Garci, which is used by the US and UK for strategic military operations. On Diego Garcia the US Dollar is the currency used. |
