BACKGROUNDER

* Pedro (Pierre) (Ton Ton) Nord Alexis who is pictured on these banknotes was in office from 21 Decembre 1902 to 2 Decembre 1908. It was authorized 14 May 1908, 7 months before Alexis left office. A comment in the SCWPM indicates that it may commemorate Nord Alexis death but this seems unlikely to me because of the date it was authorized. Although, It does have a design that appears memorial-like.

Another possibility is that it was issued to commemorate Alexis second term in office, which might account for the double portraits. This was quite an milestone for Nord Alexis  who was born in 1820!  His wife, Mère (CéCé) Alexis, niece of Henri Christophe, had apparently orchestrated the necessary votes from the delegates to ensure Alexis  second term. She also succeeded in getting 15 of Alexis's relatives or godchildren elected at the same time but she didn't live much longer and died on 11 October 1908.
