**BACKGROUNDER**
Vishwa Shanti Rashtra, the Global Country of World Peace has been in existence for more than 50 years, although not in the current form. Founded by Mahirishi Mahesh Yogi, a world renowned peace activist and practitioner of transcendental meditation, his current goal is nothing short of the elimination of world poverty. The Raam local currency notes have been circulating in Meru, The Netherlands as well as Maharishi Vedic City, Iowa, USA. As with all local currencies, their purpose is to promote commerce in a local community with merchants who accept these currencies. In the case of Raam development currency its higher purpose is to reduce poverty. These currencies have been supplemented in 2005 by the issuance by Maharishi Global Financing of 8 Trillion (10 Trillion USD) World Peace Bonds denominated in Euros which pay 10% to 15% annual interest rates. They are intended to reduce poverty through the purchase of 2,000 million hectares(~50,000 million acres) of unused land for the promotion of organic agriculture, fund the development of 3,000 "Peace Palaces" and to train peace experts in 100 world countries.
