French Oceania was comprised of a number of coral and basalt islands in the south pacific with Papeete, Tahiti acting as the capital. It included the Gambier, Marqueses, Society, Tubuai Islands and the Tuamotu Archipelago. In 1958 this area became known as the Territory of French Polynesia, excluding Tahiti which remained a French Overseas Territory. |
