Not
much is know of the political bonds/donation receipts shown above, however they both appear
to be used to finance the Presidential candidacy of Jorge Eliecer Gaitan in 1946.
The 1 Peso Bond
pictures Gaitan
and calls for "the restoration of morals and democracy of the state
through the candidacy of President Gaitan "
The title of the 10
Peso Bond calls for the "Reconquest of Power" and appears to be aimed at the
restoration of the Partido Liberal (Liberal Party) which was established
in Colombia in 1840.
"Notwithstanding
the country's commitment to democratic institutions, Colombia's history
has been characterized by periods of widespread, violent conflict. Two
civil wars resulted from bitter rivalry between the Conservative and
Liberal parties. The War of a Thousand Days (1899-1902) cost an estimated 100,000 lives, and up to
300,000 people perished during "La Violencia" (The Violence)
of the late 1940s and 1950s."(1)
The 10 Peso bond pictures leading Liberal Party members with
Benjamin Herrera,
a liberal General, shown at the left,
Jorge Eliecer Gaitan at the center. Gaitan was another leading Liberal Party member and a champion of the Colombian people. He studied law at the National University and also in Rome.
He ran unsuccessfully for President in 1946 and was assassinated in 1948. His death created a revolt known as "el bogotazo".
Liberal party member and compatriot Rafael Uribe Uribe (1859-1914)
is shown at right.
Uribe Uribe was a contemporary renaissance man who
was a general lawyer of the republic, military man, writer, politician, diplomat, educator, journalist, parliamentarian,
orator and agriculturist. He was assassinated in Bogota in 1914.
