The above 1 Real banknote is from an issue of
only 300,000 notes printed in
Cartagena
to help finance New Grenada's struggle for independence. It was printed on regular paper and
had poor
acceptance among the people since gold and silver were the
coins of the realm. The note was signed by the President of the Junta
Patriótica in Cartagena, German Gutierrez de Piñerez
y Cárcamo. It is reported
to be one of only 6 known to have survived.

Credencial Historia BRC
German Gutierrez de Piñerez
y Cárcamo was born
in Mompox and died in
Panama in 1816.
A member of an aristocratic
family, was the brother of
Gabriel and
Vicente Patriots Celedonio.
Germán graduated as a
doctor of jurisprudence and
was a prosecutor, perpetual ruler
and member of the Supreme Council
of Cartagena
in 1810. Participated in the
act that declared independence
in Santa Fe and
in Cartagena
proclaimed the absolute independence from Spain
in 1811. Mompox
supported the project
as an independent province, changed
after the
equality between her and
Cartagena. He was a member,
with Gabriel, the so-called
"radicals" opposing
the "autonomy" or
"regentistas" and participated,
as did his brothers, at war with
the militias and was in the
siege of Cartagena. Several members
of his family were killed
during the war of independence,
which is why family
Bolívar called
"founders and patriarchs
of independence".

Colombian Currency Catalog by Pedro Pablo Hernandez, who is
considered one of the top authorities on Colombian Currency (page 83
is pictured below.) The 2002 catalog by Bernardo Gonzalez White, (a
LANSA
member) does not go back to 1813 as it only lists notes
published under the name El
Banco De La Republica, the current
central bank, which was created in 1923. |
