BACKGROUNDER
Toronto Dollars are a local currency of the Toronto Dollars Community Project, Inc.,  a registered non-profit corporation started inCanada Toronto Dollars Project December 1998. The first issues were initially accepted at the St. Lawrence Market in downtown Toronto and have now expanded throughout the city with more than 150 merchant accepting Toronto Dollars.

As with other local currencies their purpose is to promote commerce in the local community. In addition they also use 10% of every Toronto Dollar to support local community projects.

The first series of Toronto Dollars were issued on 31.12.2001 and had an expiry date of 31.12.2003 although they remained valid until 31.12.2005. This series was signed by Ron Alltree-Treasurer and Joy Kagawa-President.

The second series of notes were issued to commemorate the life of a 6 year old girl named Jennifer Kateryna Koval's'kyj, S.C.(posthumous) and are called Jennifer Dollars. Jennifer was killed on 2.4.1996 by a deranged person while she was trying to help her Nanny who was being attacked by this man.

Jennifer was posthumously awarded the Canada Star of Courage(S.C.) by the Governor General and a park has been named in her honor.
Jennifer’s grandfather, Dr. Maryan Koval’s’kyj, who is a volunteer for the Toronto Dollars project, requested the Jennifer Dollars and they were issued on 2.4.2005. The Jennifer Dollars were signed by Richard Hotta-Treasurer and John Flanders-President.

The third series of Toronto Dollars are undated but were issued 1.1.2006. They are similar to the first series but contain additional security features. The 20$ note has a slightly different color. All third series notes are signed by Richard Hotta-Treasurer and John Flanders-President.

Toronto Dollars can be purchased at several local outlets. One particular merchant, the Hairy Tarantula may also supply them by mail. Ask for Leon.
