BACKGROUNDER

Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan, proclaimed its independence as the People's Republic of Bangladesh on 26 March 1971. On 22 February 1974 Pakistan recognized the independence of Bangladesh.

The first local banknote issue in 1971 used India banknotes with a BANGLADESH overprint. A least four different varieties of the BANGLADESH overprints have been reported.

Pakistan has gained recognition in recent years because of the outstanding work done by Nobel Lauriate, Mohammad Yunus. A significant contributor to the development of the economy has been the widespread propagation of microcredit, invented by Muhammad Yunus (awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006) through the Grameen Bank. By the late 1990s, Grameen Bank had 2.3 million members, along with 2.5 million members of other similar organizations.(Wikipedia)

Yunus has continued to find new ways to help people stand on their own, including the concept of "Social Businesses" and his "Poverty-Free World campaign."

TRANSPARENCY INTERNATIONAL

Bangladesh has a Transparency International Corruption Perception Index of 145 out of a total of 174 countries, a dismal record. What follows is an example of just one type of corruption which affects the most vulnerable children of Bangladesh.

Students attend classes without shelter after a politician illegally occupies school land and evicts the students from the school building (2014).

“In Bangladesh, corruption persists everywhere. Corruption has spread like cancer here, where a person can hardly get jobs done without bribery, especially in the government sector. I feel the country needs a collective effort to get rid of corruption, andAM Ahad I would like to do my part of the job as a journalist.”

Born on 31 December 1991, Sony Ramany has been working as a junior photographer at New Age, a leading English language national daily in Dhaka, for three years. He joined the photography profession at the age of 20 when he had just completed high school and intermediate college. In 2013, he won the first prize Transparency International’s “Capture Corruption” photo competition after submitting the above impactful image.
