During this forty year interval, there was a slow increase in
the number of commemorative paper money releases. There were
an additional six types produced in Latin America, and twenty-two
types world wide. |

CANADA
Canada produced two $25.00 commemorative bills (listed in the
Pick Catalog, Vol 2, 8th Edition) in this decade to celebrate the
Silver Jubilee of the Accession of George V. RRR.

COLOMBIA
Commemorative note to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the
founding of Bogota. Bogata, at an elevation of 8,563 ft., was
founded in 1538 by Gonzalo de Quesada, and was named by him after
his birthplace in Spain. The city was liberated from Spain,
first in 1814 and finally in 1819, by Simon Bolivar. It was
declared to be the Capitol of Independent Colombia in
1861.
This note is seldom seen by the average collector, and when
available is cataloged at $200.00 - 300.00 for an EF/UNC.

With the strong post-war economy, commemorative paper notes
became more popular. Latin America produced three types,
listed in Pick catalog. Vol 2, 8th Edition. |
ARGENTINA
Argentina produced its sole commemorative note in celebration
of 131 years of economic independence - 1816-1947. The
commemorative note is an overprint on Pick 264, with the overprint
of the noted date - 1816-1947 - on the back of the note. This
note is easily obtained in high grade.

CUBA
Cuba issued its first commemorative note in 1953, celebrating the
centennial of the birth of Jose Marti, Cuba's revolutionary
hero. Marti worked many years as a journalist and political
activist to gain support for the revolutionary forces for Cuba's
liberation from Spain. he was killed in battle in 1895, during
the invasion of Cuba by the liberation forces. Rarity is R,
with a Cu specimen cataloged at $150.00 to 200.00.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
The Dominican Republic celebrated the "Ano del Benefactor de La
Partria" with one issue. The note refers to Rafael Leonidas
Trujillo, Dictator from 1931 until his assassination in 1961.
The note is an overprint on the regular P83 note with the above
quotation in red on the front of the note.
Rarity: This note probably qualifies as RRRR or even R5,
since the catalog value is listed (-) which indicates that there hae
been no recent sales in the market place to judge a fair
price. It is rumored that this note may never have been
issued.

LAOS
P7 - 500 Kip - 1957 - 2500th Year of the
Buddhist Era.

With the strong post-war economy, commemorative paper notes
became more popular. Latin America produced three types,
listed in Pick catalog. Vol 2, 8th Edition.
During this decade, twelve new types of commemorative notes were
issued throughout the world, but only three from Latin
America. All Pick numbers from 1960 refer to Volumn 3, Third
Edition, 1998.

EL SALVADOR
El Salvador celebrated the bi-centennial of the birth of Jose
Canas with two notes. Senor Canas was the driving force behind
the movement that brought about freedom of slaves in El Salvador on
21 December, 1823. Senor Canas' portrait appears at the right
on the front of the one colon note.

VENEZUELA
Venezuela commemorated the 400th Anniversary of the Founding of
the City of Caracas. Caracas was eventually designated as the
capitol of the Independent Republic of Venezuela in 1829. It
was founded by Diego de Lozada in 1567, and was named after the
native indians who lived in the area. Caracas was also the
birthplace of Simon Bolivar, 1783, who is revered as the "Great
Liberator" for South America. Bolivar was buried in Caracas in
1830.
Bolivar led the revolt against Spain from 1818 to 1824, and
achieved the independence of the area that later became the
countries of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia in 1825.
Bolivar's portrait is at the right on the front of the
note. |
