This
final chapter of the commemorative paper money story only covers the first
four years of this decade. I have elected to finalize the series on the
100th anniversary year of commemorative paper currency in the Americas. We
started in 1894 with the Nicaraguan notes, and have discussed the notes of
the Americas, as well as enumerating those of the rest of the world.
The Quincentennial of Columbus' Discovery of the New World
prompted a multitude of notes in 1992. We end this chapter of the
review with the single 1994 issue printed in
Bermuda.
Bahamas
In 1992, the Bahamas printed a commemorative note to celebrate
Columbus' discovery of the New World. The front right of the one
dollar note shows a bust of columbus circled by a compass rose; the
back portrays native birds and lizards, as well as an outline of the
islands and ships standing at sea.

Columbus was the topic for the 1992 commemorative note from
Bermuda. The front of the note shows the standard portrait of Queen
Elizabeth at the right, with the commemorative overprint
"Christopher Columbus Quincentenary 1492 - 1992" at the left; at the
upper left the serial number has a pre-fix of a Maltese Cross; the
right serial number has the pre-fix of C_C (a C on top of a C with a
line between). The back of the note illustrates scuba divers on a
shipwreck, at the left, with a map of Bermuda's Islands at the
right.

In 1994 Bermuda celebrated the 25th anniversary of the
National Monetary Authority. This note is similar to P39, with a
picture of the Assembly Building on the back at the left. The Camden
Building, residence of the Royal Governor of Bermuda, is at the
right. the front of the note, with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth at
the right, has a commemorative over-print under the value.

Colombia
Colombia also celebrated the Quincentennial of Columbus'
Voyage of Discovery. The front of the note shows early sailing ships
at the left; at the right is a portrait of a young native woman,
also shown in the watermark. The back shows many native birds around
an antique map of Colombia. Columbus' flag ship, the Santa Maria, is
shown at the right.

Voyage, 12 October, 1492 - Printer BDM
A second Colombian note, printed later, in 1995, also inlcudes
commemorative wording. The 10,000 Peso note is identical to P437,
with the exception of two words: "Oro" was removed from the value,
and the word "El" was removed from the title, "Banco de la
Republica."

This survey of 100 years of commemorative paper money of the
Americas, as listed in Pick, Volume Two and Three, started with
Nicaragua in 1894. The review is limited to regular issue notes of
the ruling governments. the Nicaragua note is the first regular
commemorative issue, however other specialized issues were printed
somewhat earlier in three or four areas of the world. The type set
survey of the century 1884 thru 1994, includes 57 commeorative notes
of the Americas, with an additional 71 notes from around the
world.
