COMMEMORATIVE PAPER MONEY, PART 4: 1981-90

Eight Latin American commemorative notes were issued during this decade.  In addition, twenty-three notes were issued from other countries world-wide.

Brazil
In 1986, Brazil celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Hestor Villa-Lobos.  Villa-Lobos had become a world famous classical composer and established a very distinctive style,includigin his music many of the native melodies of Brazil.  The front of the commemorative note has his portrait on the right, and in the watermark.  The back of the note shows Villa-Lobos conducting, with a background of native trees and a flute.

Brazil also commorated the 100th Year of the republic.  Portugal originallycontrolled allof Brazil as a colony.  During the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars, Brazil declared its independence.  On 7 September 1822, Dom Pedro I declared Brazil independent and himself emperor.  From his death in 1831 until 1840, the empire was ruled by a regency.  Dom Pedro II tookover the rule inhis own right in 1840, abdicating his rule in November 1889 in the favor of a new republic.

Colombia
Colombia's next commemorative printing was to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Constitution.  For years political strife had prevented economic and cultural advancement within the country.  In 1886, liberal and conservative politicians came together to form the constitutional government that survives today.

Dominican Republic
Once again banking became a topic for commemorative printing.  The Dominican Republic celebrated the 35th Anniversary of the Banco Central de la Republica Dominicana, 1947 - 1982.  In 1947 the bank was made the sole bank of issue for the country's paper currency.  Prior to 1947, currency used in everyday exchange was U.S. money.

Venezuela
Venezuela remembered two native sons during this decade.  The Bi-centennialof the Birth of Andres Bello, 1781 - 1865, was celebrated in 1981.  A poet, Bello was born in Caracas and was a life-long friend of the "Great Liberator" Simon Bolivar.  Bello was the founder of the University of Chile. On the right front of the note is a portrait of Bello which also shows in the watermark on the left.  The back of the note illustrates a scene of Bello instructing Bolivar.

A second commemorative note celebrates the Bi-centennialof the Birth of Rafael Urdaneta, born in 1789.  As a commanding general, Urdaneta was a major influence in Venezuela's battle for independence from Spain.  His major victory was the Battle of Lake Maricaibo.  The front of the note has Urdaneta's portrait on the right and in the watermark on the left.  The back illustrates the battle of Maracaibo.

North Ireland

   - P69 - L20.00 - 1983 - 200th Year of the Bank of Ireland.

Philippines
   - P166a,b - 2 Pesos - 1981 - Celebration of the Papal Visit.
   - P167a,b - 10 Pesos - 1981 - Celebration of the Inauguration of President Marcos.
   - P175a,b - 5 Pesos - 1986 - Commemorative of President Aquino's visit to the U.S.
   - P176a,b - 5 Pesos - 18 October, 1987 - Celebrates the Canonization of San Lorenzo Ruiz.
   - P177a,b - 5 Pesos - 1989 - 40th Anniversary of the Central Bank.
   - P178 - 5 Pesos - 1990 - Celebrates Women's Rights.

Portugal

   - P179b - 100 Escudos - 12 February, 1987 - 300th Anniversary of Portuguese paper money.  prefix to the serial number is FIL.  Notes are in decorative folders.

Singapore
   - P30 - $50.00 - 9 August, 1990 - 25th Anniversary of Independence.

Sudan

   - P22 - L20.00 - 1 January, 1981 - 25th Anniversary of Independence.

Swaziland
   - P6 - 10 Emalangeni - 1981 - Diamond Jubilee of King Sobhusa II.

Thailand

Tonga

Western Samoa
   - P31a,b,c - 2 Taka - ND (1990) - 50th Anniversary of the Head of State.

Part 5 will cover the years 1991 to 1994, completing this review of the first century of Latin America's commemorative currency.  A total of eight notes were printed in latin America
