NUMISMATIC MUSEUM
Posted

As an instrument of trade and power, currency also relates the
history of our times. The Numismatic Museum was established to
exhibit to the public a monetary heritage, which is composed of the
most beautiful pieces of the Bank of the Republic, (Banque de la
Republique d'Haiti (BRH).
Museums in Cap-Haitian and Port-au-Prince exhibit a national
heritage made up of coins, medals, banknotes, historical documents,
and other objects associated with Haitian currency.
Between the cocao beans from the indigenous period through the
coins of the colonial period, the history of the Haitian people
unwinds from one coin to another. |
THE PERMANENT EXHIBITS
The Numismatic Museum displays a permanent exhibit, which is
found in Cap-Haitien from the indigenous period through the death of
Henry I in 1820. The exhibit in Port-au-Prince dates from the
foundation of the Republic in 1807 to the present day. Numismatists,
either expert or amateur, students, researchers will all discover a
modern museum. |
TEMPORARY EXHIBITS
The Currency Museum also welcomes temporary exhibits that
reflect the three purposes of the museum: teaching, scientific, and
social. These exhibitions feature technical, financial, social,
artistic, and printing technique themes of all of their
currency. |
LOCATION OF THE MUSEUMS
In Port-au-Prince, the Numismatic Museum is located in the new
headquarters of the BRH, at the corner of Quai and Pavee Streets.
In Cap-Haitien, the Museum shares space with a branch of the
BRH in a historical building, the Altieri House, which is more than
a century old and whose location has been meticulously restored. It
occupies the block formed by 16/17 A and 16/17 B
streets. |
