NEW NOTE OF 20,000 PESOS

R ecently Banco Central de Chile put into circulation a new note
of 20,000 Pesos, dated 1998. Details about this new note
follows:
DENOMINATION: 20,000 Chilean Pesos (1998): green, blue, orange on
m/c underprint.
OBVERSE: Don Andres Bello at right, at center, the coat of arms
of the Justice Courts in Santiago de Chile, the capital.
REVERSE: The central motif represents the Casa Central of the
University of Chile. In the lower left corner a round seal
representing the logo of the Central Bank of Chile. this bill was
printed by Casa de Moneda de Chile.
Andres Bello was born November 29, 1781 in Caracas, Venezuela
into a middle-class Creole family. In 1797 he entered the University
of Caracas, receiving an arts degree in 1800. In 1810 he was sent to
London as part of a diplomatic mission headed by Simon Bolivar.
Bello lived in london 19 years, departing in 1829 with his family on
being offered a position in the Chilean government.
In Chile, he helped write the Constitution in 1833. Bello was
editor of the newspaper "El Araucano" between 1830 and 1853. he was
a senator from 1837 to 1864. His Spanish grammer is perhaps the
greatest ever produced. His civil law code is still in effect in
Chile and in many other Latin American countries. His works on
philosophy are highly regarded, and his book on international law
was acclaimed a classic. He also founded the Universidad de
Chile.
Bello died in Santiago de Chile on October 15, 1865. He is
considered the greatest humanist of the 19th century. His portrait
appears on all Bs 50 notes in Venezuela. Bello became the third
Venezuelan, along with Libertador Bolivar and Grand Marshal Sucre,
to appear on the notes of Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador.
