Sao Paulo - The BANCO CENTRAL (Central Bank) will issue
banknotes of R$2 and R$20 in the spring of 2001.
The objective is to facilitate commercial exchange and to
economize up to R$7 million by issuing fewer banknotes.
In addition, the new banknotes may reduce between 10% and 16%
of the total number of banknotes in circulation in the
country.
Seven animals in danger of extinction in Brasil will be shown
on the banknotes.
The banknotes prototypes were shown to the press by the
adjunct-chief of the "Departamento do Meio-Circulante" of the
Central Bank, Luiz Henriqaue de Almeida Cabral, in the Central
headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.
