BOOK REVIEW
O ne of the better developments in the short history of current
bank note collecting, has been the growth of reference materials
covering areas that were once considered outside the mainstream. We
have seen a great deal of this research presented in the pages of
LANSA magazine.
Billetes de la Republica Argentina, 1890 - 2000 is the
result of much research and is a reference book of some depth.
Bottero has also created a reference book that is needed by the
collecting community. This is a book that belongs in each LANSA
member's library. The catalog covers the issues of the Central Bank
of Argentina from 1890 - 2000.
The book has 396+ pages. The chapters are listed in the index.
Each chapter is divided into several sections, each of which is
composed of an introduction to the series; a listing of the bank
officials and a page of facimile signatures; any symbols and
overstamps that appear on the notes, and pictures of any watermarks.
These are followed in "spreadsheet" style summarizing what is known
of the notes covered in that section - serial number range and year
of issues, plus descriptive details, including replacements. There
are cross-references to other catalogs including Pick and Guevera.
Each note and each page is in full color and on slick paper, giving
the book some heft.
The prices shown are probably not valid anymore due to market
conditions and this may give potential buyers a reason not to buy
the book for up-to-date market values. As a guide, though, to
relative worth, it should suffice nicely. As with any note - the
actual market sets the value.
The book is well made and available in both hard bound and
softbound. The pages are slick and colorful with one banknote, with
its information per page. Probably one of the more unique aspects in
that each major chapter begins with a relevant "numismatic" quote by
a literary author. Cervantes, Borgas, Seneca, and others.
There are some small criticms that could be mentioned in
comparing this book with the Standard Catalog (Pick). In the Pick
catalog, there is a graphic for the watermark varieties of the 1899
issues; this is not mentioned in the Bottero book unless I missed
it. The Pick catalog also lists summaries of official title changes
found on differing varieties, while Bottero focuses on signature
changes. (I guess this amounts to the same difference!) This is
almost a minor point considering the amount of relevant and
collector usable information.
Updates and new information on banknotes post 2000 will
require a new edition or an addendum. All in all most highly
recommended as an invaluable reference.
